## Membership

### Can I use Darkroom+ across my Apple devices?

Yes. One purchase covers your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro when you're signed in with the same Apple ID that bought it. Access usually syncs via iCloud Keychain; if it doesn't, open Darkroom Settings and tap *Already made a purchase?*

More detail on the [Darkroom+ membership](/help/membership/darkroom+) page.

### What does a Darkroom+ membership cost?

Darkroom+ is offered as monthly, yearly, and Forever (one-time) plans. Prices vary by country and occasional campaigns — check the in-app paywall or our [App Store page](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id953286746?pt=117198944&mt=8) for your account.

All current plans unlock the same premium features, including future ones.

### Can I try Darkroom+ before paying?

Yes. You can use every premium tool without a membership — export is what requires Darkroom+. *Try it Free* on this website only opens the App Store, where Apple may ask you to authorize a payment method. If a trial is offered on your account, that starts the trial. If it isn't, the sheet is a purchase. You can close it and keep editing. More on the [Darkroom+](/help/membership/darkroom+#trial) page.

### How do I restore Darkroom+ on a new device?

Sign in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase, then open Darkroom Settings and tap *Already made a purchase?* If that fails, confirm the Apple ID under Media & Purchases, try signing out and back into the App Store, and check [Apple System Status](https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/).

### Does Family Sharing work with Darkroom+?

Yes for all membership options — turn on Purchase Sharing in Family Sharing settings. Apple may limit device sharing for some one-time purchases (Forever or [legacy](/help/membership/legacy)); subscription sharing generally has fewer restrictions. Details on the [membership page](/help/membership/darkroom+).

### Can I buy Darkroom+ instead of subscribing?

Yes. Look for the Forever one-time purchase in the paywall — tap *show all purchase options* if it isn't visible. Same features as the subscriptions; you pay once up front.

### Where is the Forever one-time purchase?

In the app paywall. Open any premium tool, or the Membership pane in Settings, tap on the up sell banner. In the paywall, tap *show all purchase options* if you only see monthly and yearly. Same features as the subscriptions; you pay once up front. There is no separate checkout on the website.

### Do I keep my edits and presets if I cancel?

Yes. Your originals are never altered, and your edits and presets stay on the device. You'll need an active membership again only to *export* work that uses premium tools. See [more on the membership page](/help/membership/darkroom+#keep-edits).

### How do I cancel a trial or subscription, or get a refund?

Cancel from your App Store account: [Manage subscriptions](https://apple.co/2Th4vqI). Apple handles billing and refunds — use their [refund flow](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204084) for Forever purchases or unexpected charges.

### Can I switch from a subscription to Forever?

Yes, but not in one tap. Cancel the subscription, let it fully lapse, then buy Forever in Darkroom. Switching from Monthly to Yearly is separate — that's a one-step action in Membership settings, and you don't need to cancel first. Details on the [membership page](/help/membership/darkroom+).

### Can I switch from Monthly to Yearly?

Yes. Open the Membership pane in Settings and switch there — no cancelation required. Details on the [membership page](/help/membership/darkroom+).

### Do you offer promo codes or discounts?

We don't generally issue educational or institutional promo codes. Seasonal offers appear automatically in-app when you're eligible. If an in-app discount doesn't apply correctly, [email us](mailto:feedback@darkroom.co) with a screenshot.

### What is a legacy purchase?

A one-time purchase from before Darkroom+ (through February 2020) that unlocks a limited set of older premium features. Full details and the feature list are on the [Legacy Purchase](/help/membership/legacy) page.

## Limits & platforms

### Where is feature X — or are you considering it?

If it isn't in the app, it isn't available yet. Check or vote on our public [feature suggestion board](/suggest), or add your own request.

### Does Darkroom support OS 26 and Liquid Glass?

Yes. Darkroom runs on current iOS, iPadOS, and macOS releases — including iOS & iPadOS 26 / macOS Tahoe and iOS & iPadOS 27 / macOS Golden Gate — and uses Liquid Glass on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

### Is there an Android or Windows app?

Not today — Darkroom is Apple-only (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro). You can [sign up for Android updates](/android) or [Windows updates](/windows). Copycat apps on other stores aren't ours; we recommend avoiding them.

### Are some features missing on Mac?

A few. Custom app icons must be set [manually on Mac](/help/app/mac-app-icon), and hashtag export helpers are iOS-focused where those social apps live. We aim for parity where the platform allows.

### Is Darkroom available in my language?

Yes for 16 languages: English, Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and Turkish. Darkroom follows the system language; you can also set a per-app language under *Settings → Darkroom → Language*. Missing yours? [Request it](mailto:feedback@darkroom.co?subject=Language%20Request).

### Do you have a Beta program?

Yes — join via the [Beta page](/beta). Read the risks carefully, and please send feedback when you try new builds.

### Can I resize a photo or video?

Not yet. You can crop and place a photo in a frame; true resize / upscale isn't available. It's on our radar via the [feature board](/suggest).

### Can I browse and edit photos on an external drive?

Not without importing them first. Darkroom works from your Apple Photos library (and in-app import), not as a folder browser for external disks.

### Can I play back Live Photos?

Not currently. We're considering bringing playback back.

### Can I process ProRes video?

Not yet — export will error. Support is planned.

### Can Darkroom display, edit, and export HDR photos & videos?

Not yet. We're considering HDR support. For how iPhone HDR capture works, see [Apple's documentation](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/adjust-hdr-camera-settings-iph2cafe2ebc/ios).

### Can I edit slow-motion video?

Not yet — Darkroom can't display, edit, export, or change playback speed of slow-motion clips.

## Editing & library

### How do I save, export, or share an edit?

Apple Photos keeps showing the original until you export. Open *Export* from the editor (or press-and-hold a photo in the library) and choose *Save*, *Save Copy*, or share to another app.

See the [Export](/help/export/export-view) and [Export Settings](/help/export/export-settings) pages for formats, quality, and metadata options.

### Why doesn't Apple Photos show my edit?

Photos shows the file in your library, not the live preview inside Darkroom. Until you export, Photos, the share sheet, and your other devices still show the original.

Choose *Save* to update that library item, or *Save Copy* to add a separate photo. Walkthrough on the [Export](/help/export/export-view) page.

### How do I undo a Save?

*Reset Edits* clears the sliders in Darkroom. It does not remove a version already written into Apple Photos.

To put the pre-export photo back, open it in Photos, tap *Edit*, then *Revert to Original*. On Mac, choose *Image → Revert to Original*. *Save Copy* is a separate photo — delete that copy if you don't want it. Steps on the [Export](/help/export/export-view#undo-save) page.

### What happens if I delete Darkroom?

Your photos stay in Apple Photos. Edits you never exported live only inside Darkroom, so deleting the app removes them. Photos you already wrote with *Save* or *Save Copy* remain.

Presets sync through iCloud and come back after you reinstall, on the same Apple ID with iCloud Drive on. More on the [iCloud Library](/help/manage/icloud-library) page.

### Can I choose a color profile when I export?

No. Export Settings lets you pick JPEG, HEIF, PNG, or TIFF, plus metadata and quality. It does not let you choose sRGB or Display P3. Details on the [Export Settings](/help/export/export-settings) page.

### Can I blur the background?

Darkroom doesn't have a blur slider. On a Portrait photo, depth blur is adjusted in Apple Photos. Masks can still isolate a subject or background so you can change its light or color — that is not a blur. More on the [Masks](/help/edit/masks-local-adjustments) page.

### Why don't I see Subject or Background masks?

Sky, Skin, and Teeth masks only appear on Portrait and ProRAW photos. Subject, Foreground, and Background are built for other photos too, but a large camera RAW can use enough memory that those masks don't generate, especially on an older device with little free memory. The rest of the edit still works. More on the [Masks](/help/edit/masks-local-adjustments) page.

### How do I create, share, or update a preset?

After editing, use *Create Preset* in the Presets tool. Share, update, and delete actions live under the preset's *•••* menu.

Full walkthrough: [Presets](/help/edit/presets) and the [Create a Preset](/help/guide/create-preset) guide.

### How do I install a community preset from the website?

Open [darkroom.co/presets](/presets), choose a look, and tap *Install*. That opens Darkroom (or the App Store if it isn't installed yet) and adds the preset to your Community list. In the app, tap the compass icon in the Presets tool to browse the same catalog.

Walkthrough: [Presets](/help/edit/presets).

### How do I import photos from a camera or SD card?

Connect the camera or card (USB / SD reader), open Darkroom, and choose *Import* from the album list — the Library tab on iPhone, the sidebar on iPad and Mac. Step-by-step on the [Import](/help/manage/import) page.

### Importing on Mac doesn't work.

Darkroom often needs Full Disk Access for drives and folders. In *System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access*, add Darkroom, then try Import or drag-and-drop again. Step-by-step on the [Import](/help/manage/import) page.

### Why do photos keep downloading from iCloud?

With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage, Apple may offload full originals (especially RAW) and keep previews. Opening or editing them triggers a download. You can change this in Photos settings — details in [Apple's docs](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205703) and our [iCloud Library](/help/manage/icloud-library) page.

### Do my Darkroom edits sync across devices?

Photos sync via iCloud Photos; Darkroom's edit stack stays local to each device. To carry a finished look to another device, use *Save / Modify Original* so the result syncs through Apple Photos. More in [iCloud Library](/help/manage/icloud-library).

### Why does Darkroom need access to my photos?

To show and edit your library. You can grant full access or selected photos. We never upload or remotely store your photos, and nothing leaves the device unless you export or share it. See our [Privacy Policy](/legal/privacy-policy).

### What is your privacy policy?

Your photos stay on your devices. We don't sell or remotely store your library. Read the full policy in plain language: [Privacy Policy](/legal/privacy-policy).

### How do I report a bug or get support?

For ideas and votes, use the [feature board](/suggest).

For a bug or a crash, use **Report an Issue** in the *•••* action menu. It submits directly from the app — no email client involved — and attaches the diagnostic logs we need to actually track the problem down, which is why it's far more useful to us than a description alone. You can include your email address so we can follow up. Before reporting, update Darkroom and your OS, and note the steps that reproduce it; screenshots or a screen recording help a lot.

You can also [email feedback@darkroom.co](mailto:feedback@darkroom.co).

## AI & Machine Learning

### Does Darkroom use AI?

Yes, for a few specific jobs.

In the app, depth masks use [Depth Anything](https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/models/#:~:text=Depth%20Anything%20V2), a model Apple provides. It runs on your device, and the photo stays there. Foreground, Background, and Depth Range are built from that depth. Subject masks are selected on the device too. How each mask works is on the [Masks](/help/edit/masks-local-adjustments) page.

On this website, [Claude Haiku](https://www.anthropic.com/claude/haiku) answers the question box at the top of Help from our help pages. [Claude Sonnet](https://www.anthropic.com/claude/sonnet) writes the description on a community preset from that preset's edits. Neither one reads your photo.

### Do you use my photos to train AI?

No. A depth mask is estimated on your device. We don't receive the photo, and it isn't used to train a model. A preset description is written from the edits in the preset, not from a photograph.

### What happens to a question I ask in Help?

It's sent to Anthropic so [Claude Haiku](https://www.anthropic.com/claude/haiku) can answer from our help pages. Your question isn't used to train their models. [Anthropic's policy](https://privacy.claude.com/en/articles/7996868-is-my-data-used-for-model-training) says API inputs aren't used for training unless the customer opts in. We don't. If the pages don't cover the question, the box says so, and you can send us a message.

## Files & RAW

### What are RAW photos?

RAW files are unprocessed sensor data — more editing latitude, especially in high contrast or low light, at the cost of larger files. Darkroom edits them non-destructively. Practical workflow: [How to Edit RAW Photos](/help/guide/raw-editing).

### What is ProRAW?

Apple's format (from iPhone 12 Pro onward) that keeps RAW-like latitude with computational photography baked in. Darkroom recognizes ProRAW with a badge. Enable capture in Camera settings — [Apple's guide](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211965) — or use an app like [Halide](https://halide.cam).

### Why does my RAW photo look darker than the JPEG?

The JPEG is heavily processed by the camera or iPhone; the RAW is the uncooked capture. Brightness and color are yours to set — see the [RAW editing guide](/help/guide/raw-editing).

### Does Darkroom support my camera's RAW format?

Usually yes — we use Apple's system RAW support. Check Apple's lists for your OS:

- [iOS & iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate](https://support.apple.com/en-us/127493)
- [iOS & iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe](https://support.apple.com/en-us/122870)
- [iOS & iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia](https://support.apple.com/en-us/120534)

Brand-new cameras may need an OS update before they appear.

### Can I still edit an unsupported RAW file?

Convert it to DNG first (e.g. with Adobe's free [DNG Converter](https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/adobe-dng-converter.html) on Mac), then import the DNG. Use the latest converter version if conversion fails.

### I'm getting an error when opening a RAW photo

**Update your OS first.** The cutoff depends on the camera. Fujifilm compressed RAW opens on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 26.2 and later. Nikon HE and HE* need 26.4.1 or later. Sony lossless compressed opens on current releases. On an older OS you'll still need to switch the camera to uncompressed RAW (on Nikon, lossless rather than HE).

One remaining gap: Sony α7 V **Compressed** and **Compressed HQ** still don't decode. Stay on Lossless Comp for that body. Lossless compressed from the α7 V does open.

Other causes worth checking:

- **Transfer corruption** — Try copying the file across again.
- **An unsupported camera format** — Convert it to DNG first; see the question above.
- **No RAW badge** — Some devices lack the hardware to process RAW.

See [RAW & ProRAW Files](/help/edit/raw-files) for the full troubleshooting path.
