  • Switching filters causes the state of the RAW/JPG switcher to reset.
Frame Tool

Grain & RAW + JPG

Hot on the heels of our iOS 12 & Hashtags release last month we are thrilled to bring you one of our most requested features: Film Grain. Combined with a wide set of RAW and Portrait workflow improvements.

  • Grain An intelligent and advanced film-simulation grain that adapts to your photo and creates a much richer and nostalgic look. It introduces an emotionality and a mood to your photo that the crisp, clean, de-noised digital images of today cannot capture. Grain adds texture into otherwise flat regions of your image, giving your eye something to look at, something to notice.
  • RAW + JPG For the first time on iOS, seamlessly switch between RAW and JPG when available. Our good friends at Halide are the first and only app to support capturing RAW+JPG in a combined single asset that does just that. So now in our library there is one asset with a new icon, indicating RAW+JPG contains two files to switch between. And when viewing/editing the photo there is a type switch button in the top left.

Changes

  • Added a convenient "Export Options" shortcut button to the export sheet so you can easily update copyright/location/file format settings while exporting.
  • Added library badges to differentiate between RAW and RAW+JPEG assets, and updated the RAW badge.
  • Improved the handling of RAW files with corrupt metadata, which now will still render correctly after initializing the RAW engine.
  • Improved the handling of Portrait images that fail to load depth data, they will now appear as JPEG images that can still be edited.
  • Improved the several reliability issues around downloading from iCloud.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Halide portrait photos to appear without blur on iPhone XS-and-newer devices.
  • Fixed a bug where rotating a portrait photo caused an over-rotation of the depth map.
  • Fixed issues that caused touch events to be missed while scrolling through library.
  • Fixed an issue where a couple of areas of the app weren't properly translated.

iOS 12 & Hashtag Sets

Following a long summer break in which our founder Majd Taby got married in the beautiful (and hot) fields of southern France, we are back with a feature-packed release.

  • Hashtag Sets Darkroom for iOS 12 adds the most extensive hashtag support for mobile photographers on iOS, allowing you to export sets of hashtags to the clipboard with one tap. We even went through the effort to make Hashtag Sets accessible system wide.
    • Export Option Select several hashtag sets that will be copied right after your export is finished.
    • Siri Shortcuts Define a custom shortcut for several hashtag sets, and access it from anywhere in the system using your own custom phrase.
    • Today Widget For the times when you can't speak or when you want to copy several hashtag sets, but don't want to jump into the app.
    • Quick Actions In fact, our Today Widget is also accessible from the app icon on your home screen with a force touch.
  • Portrait HD Added support for the new High-Definition depth-map that iOS 12 generates when it detects a face in a Portrait-mode photo, that provides much sharper hair-and body contours. By default we use the Portrait HD depth-map when it's available. We made it possible to easily switch between Standard and HD right when editing a photo.
  • Progress & Status Now when (batch) exporting photos we will show progress as a percentage, and even say what we are doing (downloading, saving) to make waiting a more transparent experience. And upgraded our status messages to clearly indicate when things are done, or acknowledge a successful action; copied hashtag sets etc.

Changes

  • Improved stability of Portrait & RAW
    • Fixed a memory issue where landscape orientation RAW photos wouldn't load properly.
    • Fixed an issue that would cause RAW and Portrait photos not being loaded properly.
    • Fixed a crash that could occur if a Portrait photo wouldn't load.

Frame Tool

Content-Aware Frame Tool & Duotone Filters

For the first time since 2015, we're releasing a new top-level tool to Darkroom: The Frame Tool. To celebrate, we're also launching a new premium filter pack to complement it: Duotone Filters. As always, we've also packed the update with a large amount of enhancements and bug fixes.

  • Frame Tool - Free With frames you can extend or enhance a photo beyond its original bounds. We make it super easy and fun with our Content-Aware Color Palette, as well as pastel, gray-tones, and bold palettes. We also make it easier to display or share your photos with Frame Inset Presets, making sure you can have a lot more fun sharing as Stories or Status.
  • Duotone Filters - Premium The brand new Duotone filters are a bold, colorful, and playful alternative to black and white photos. And are a wonderfully graphic pairing to our new Frame Tool. The frames will perfectly match your photo's mood and truly enhance and extend them.
  • Privacy Enhancements Photos are some of your most private data, and with GPS location commonly embedded, can contain a wealth of information about your personal life. With an eye on privacy, Darkroom 3.6 adds a location toggle to enable and disable embedding location information in photos when exporting. That way location can be maintained privately on your phone for captured photos, but can be removed when sharing to third party platforms to prevent tracking.

    • Improved the performance of using the depth blur slider for portrait photos.
    • Fixed an issue related to iCloud that could cause the depth information to not be properly loaded.
    • Improved the way we process the depth information which enables increased detail.

    • Fixed an issue that caused the wrong photos to be loaded, when scrolling quickly through library or when on a slower internet connection.
    • Fixed an issue that caused crashes when using the app in long sessions and when backgrounding the app. This was caused by in-app memory accumulating as you scrolled through your library.
    • Added an option to “Clear Photo Cache” in order to free up memory and storage space on resource-constrained devices.

Darkroom on iPhone X

iPhone X

In celebration of the release of the iPhone X into the wild, this release uses a mountain of new technologies to make the experience truly shine. This release further solidifies the foundation we built for the 3.0 release only a month and a half ago. With the switch to Metal 2, and supporting Wide Gamut Color Darkroom 3.2 is among a very small circle of photo editors that provides truly professional grade editing.
